Webinars, events, opportunities, and giveaways
In short, free stuff you can use and/or leverage!
Hi everyone!
Who doesn’t like freebies and useful tools for all kinds of things? Let’s save us all the faff and get right into it!
How to get tangible results from social media
I somehow find myself in yet another committee this year helping out in the Communications Team for The International Institute for Conservation of Historic and Artistic Work (IIC). I am running a free webinar on how to get the most of your social media for professional purposes on June 6th at 2pm ET.
I am collaborating with the excellent Mariana Onofri (emerging conservator from Brazil using social media to propose conservation regulation at the national level!) for this, and we have made some short slides that I can promise you will not repeat the stuff you have already been told in other social media webinars run by heritage organisations. I know this because I’ve attended a bunch of them myself and wanted to make sure we are giving fresh information!
Why is this event different? Because we have no intention of giving you instructions on how to upload stories on Instagram, share TikTok videos, or give you a step-by-step how-to anything on any of these platforms.
Instead, we have made a PDF full of links with YouTube instructional videos you can use for that.
With that out of the way, we will use the webinar time to talk about strategy - why are you on social? How are you using it to promote your work/business/publication? Why is it just not working? I am really looking forward to talking about how socials work, not in a functional way, but in a way that actually gets tangible, real-world results.
This event is being run in the context of the 2024 IIC Congress in Lima. Register here to find out what in the world we’re talking about.
Free registration giveaway for The Society of American Archivists 2024
For those of you not aware, I am now Customer Success Manager for Conserv. So here’s something else you may not have been aware of! As a vendor for museums, libraries, archives, etc., Conserv sets up booths at various professional conferences throughout the year. This means Conserv (just like other companies at these events) pays for a sponsorship to set up said booth. Depending on the event, booth setups generally come with full registrations for at least one company representative - this is because organisations can’t expect company representatives to be members of every conference they wish to attend, and someone needs to be at the booth!
But here’s the bit that interests YOU. Sometimes, the company buying the booth only has 1 representative to send, and then… the sponsorship package comes with more than 1 full registration. This means that there are extra registrations that can be given away for free.
So here’s the link if you want to try to get that free registration for ARCHIVES*RECORDS 2024! The winner will be announced on June 7th, giving you 3 extra days until early bird prices close on June 10th in case you want to wait last minute to see if you win or not!
And here’s another tip - it’s worth following vendor socials and signing up for their newsletters - not just Conserv, because these giveaways just show up as companies find out they may have stuff that can just be given out, and it gets put on the social media channels. Talk about socials for tangible gains eh! Good luck!
Free webinars on… whatever you need?
Guess what else is kind of cool? As part of my job, I need to create content around environmental monitoring and preventive care for collections. Free content. Some of it goes on the Conserv community (which is also free), some of it goes on the blog, and some of it… wait for it… is going into free webinars.
Right, so free webinars where? Details 👇
I know that smaller regional groups for preservation professionals like to be able to offer their members free events and resources (like webinars), and I know for a fact that it can be challenging to set up a constant stream of programming. (Seriously, just watch me struggle to find French speakers for my GLAM language practice sessions…)
Where do you find continuous, high quality content given for free?? You network, you email, you ask your friends and colleagues, you look around and try to find someone who is nice enough to be willing to give you their time for free - or you find someone who is being paid by their own job to offer this content out to you. Well…
Ok, maybe not so much tribute, but please take advantage of the fact that I am being paid by someone else to make this stuff for you - as opposed to having to make it on my own time/money, which has been the case so far until now!
Hot tip: It is worth reaching out to organisations whose mission you know includes education and resource sharing because there will be people there whose job description includes offering this stuff to people who ask for it. Note the “people who ask for it” bit! Reach out to your national institutions and organisations and ASK FOR IT! Chances are they have to say yes to you.
So yeah, I already have a webinar on the history of environmental monitoring standards for collections and am working on some other topics that I think people might be interested in learning more about, but feel free to reach out and let me know if you are interested in making something!
Have you read Feedback for Conservators?
This is a shoutout to the amazing Marta Estadella Colomé, writer of the Feedback for Conservators Substack. This thread is already over, but it has 20 fantastic posts on how to go about surviving the Conservator profession - especially valuable if you are an emerging conservator, but really excellent content for anyone even if you are not in the field. It contains resources, digital tools, thoughts on CVs, job interviews, salary negotiations, and more. Go check it out if you haven’t already! (Marta, I owe you an email!)
Be a President or General Secretary
And this is just a final tidbit for those of you who may not have found out yet. The President and General Secretary positions in IIC will be open very soon because the incumbents have reached their maximum allowed terms. If you are an established professional and a member/fellow of IIC, do consider leading the group over the next few years! I can only imagine it’s a ton of work but probably extremely rewarding and a chance to make a difference from the top.
Wishing you all a great Sunday!
Angelica
